About this Role

The City of Burnaby is recruiting for Plan Checker 1, Plan Checker 2, or Building Technologist positions in the Plan Checking unit. These roles involve examining building plans for compliance with building codes, regulations, and municipal bylaws, with increasing complexity and responsibility across the three levels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Examine building plans for compliance with building code, regulations, and municipal bylaws
  • Issue building permits when applicable regulations are satisfied
  • Prepare routine correspondence and reports related to activities
  • Maintain records and store plans
  • Coordinate processing of permit applications (Plan Checker 2 and Building Technologist)

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an Institute of Technology with a diploma in Building Technology, or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Knowledge of preparation and use of building plans and specifications
  • Ability to interpret building construction plans rapidly and accurately
  • Sound knowledge of municipal bylaws, provincial building code, regulations, building construction practices and materials
  • British Columbia Driver's License

Position Details

Location: City Hall
Hours: Auxiliary position; typical shifts Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–4:30 PM; hours and shifts based on operational requirements with no guaranteed hours, may include on-call shifts
